Orchestra Music in Schools and Theaters Throughout Denver

Inside the Orchestra (ISO) provides many different programs for children and families throughout Denver, Colorado. We improve children’s educational experience by putting music in schools and placing the kids directly inside the Orchestra. This gives them a once in a lifetime chance to not only hear classical compositions live, but be a part of the music as well.

If you have questions about the programs we run that put music in schools and in the community, contact our Denver non-profit organization for more information.

Tiny Tots
Tiny Tots by Inside the Orchestra is an engaging 45-minute performance created to introduce kids ages 6 and under to orchestral music.  We put kids literally “inside the orchestra” as they are surrounded on the stage by our adult professional orchestra. The audience hears well-known repertoire from “Looney Tunes” to Beethoven. Children stomp like giants during the “Montagues and Capulets,” grow with music during “Also sprach Zarathustra,” and ride into the sunset with the “William Tell Overture.” We currently run both a Fall and a Winter Tiny Tots season. Shows often sell out.

Elementary School
Inside the Orchestra is performed in more than 30 Denver elementary schools and venues in 60 concerts a season, reaching 25,000 students and giving most children their only first-hand exposure to orchestra music. We have performed in Arapahoe, Douglas, Denver, Adams, Jefferson, Boulder and Summit Counties. Many of the schools are Title 1 and have very limited arts programs.

Both the repertoire and approach to learning that Inside the Orchestra maintains are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. The conductor introduces key elements of symphonic music such as transitions, orchestral “color” and identifying major and minor keys with happy and sad. The audience is also treated to up-close-and-personal demos by the strings, woodwinds, horns and percussion. Music teachers who are proficient with their instruments are invited to sit in with our professional orchestra. In addition, one child is given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to conduct the ISO orchestra. By doing so, the student and audience quickly learn the cause and effect between conductor and musician.

Soloist/Concerto
ISO proudly fosters young talent with our Concerto Program, created by Carolyn Shaak and coordinated by June Haun. Each season, over 30 soloists (Grades K-6) perform with the ISO orchestra during the concerts, demonstrating peer success to our young audiences. Auditions are held throughout the year with our Concerto Coordinator June Haun. The Concerto Program serves as a valuable launch pad for future performance opportunities, giving soloists experience, confidence and inspiration to pursue their talents.
ISO for Adults
ISO for Adults is our annual signature event and fundraiser. This is an adult version of our popular Inside the Orchestra program. Every seat in the house is prime as you are surrounded by our professional musicians. Event coming in November. Be sure to check back for more details as you don’t want to miss out!
ISO for ALL Children
New this year and created by popular demand. ISO for ALL children is an Inside the Orchestra program specially designed for children with special needs. The performance is a rich experience of listening, watching and moving. Designed in conjunction with musicians, parents, teachers, therapists and the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts.
